There are more than 65.3 million displaced people worldwide. That’s equivalent to 1/5 of the U.S. population.
- More than half of all refugees are children.
- Every 3 seconds someone flees their home from violent conflict.
- Conflicts that create refugees typically last 26 years.
I currently help teach English to refugees in an apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona. GoTEN has rented an apartment in the refugee complex and has set up the bedrooms as classrooms. All the classes are run by volunteers. Money I raise running for refugees will go towards expenses such as computers with ESL software, rent and utilities.
I need you because they need us. A newly resettled refugee in the USA receives just under $1000 to pay rent, groceries, transportation, etc. They must quickly learn English, get a job and become self-sufficient. The refugees I am helping have a great work ethic and are striving to make a new start.
To start a new English center in a new refugee apartment costs about $20,000.
